New Connections Made at Sport Med BC 30th Anniversary AGM

Last Updated on May 30, 2023 by Alfred Ball

Sport Med BC turned 30!  Last night was their annual general meeting and 30th anniversary gala.   My first connection with SportMedBC was while attending the University of British Columbia when I took a course on athletic taping in 1999. I subsequently signed up as a Sports First Aider. Now I am on their providers list as a Strength and Conditioning Coach because I have a certificate from the National Strength and Conditioning Association to be able to develop strength training programs for athletes (many of the principles apply to rehabilitation).
It was really neat to learn about the history of sports injury management in British Columbia and how Sport Med BC formed in a class room at UBC when Dr. Jack Tauton connected a few health and medical professionals. It was Dr.Tauton who inspired me to apply for an Anti-Doping role at the Vancouver 2012 Olympics which was one of the best experiences of my life!
It has grown into a large organization which assists many people in becoming and staying active especially through the InTraining Sun Run Walk/Run programs held every year. They have really branched out to provide more media rich content to connect many of the best health and medical providers in the province with their peers and the public. I attend every year to reconnect with peers, learn about what is going on at SportMedBC and meet new people.
This year was no different.  I had a very good conversation about rehabilitation management and shared experiences Olympic experiences with Kate Milne, of Cardea Health Consulting.  She is a fellow health promoter and entrepreneur. We also spoke about the challenges of keeping people active and healthy through various education platforms include eLearning as well as how to help the public gain greater access to funding for preventive programs through their health benefits plans.
We are passionate about building more ways to provide education for our clients and business associates. If you have any topic ideas or any specific questions you would like to know more about please email  Alfred Ball or leave a comment below with details.
